Ready, Set, LEARN!!!

Welcome back Mrs. Worthy's 4th grade Scholars!  I am so excited to be back to school!  I have been hard at work getting our classroom set up for a successful school year. 

I had a fun summer of learning and relaxing.  I had the opportunity to attend several professional developments this summer and I learned a lot! 

I also had a blast driving the Sonora Elementary Mobile library van.  I want to give a big shout out to Dylan and Jonah who regularly checked out books this summer.  Way to go boys! 





Along with delivering books this summer, I also did my fair share of reading!  I read 30 young adult books this summer!  You can find my book recommendations on Instagram under the hashtag, #mrsworthyrecommends.  I look forward to telling you all about them!

My most favorite part of the summer was spending time with my family.  Ellie, Mr. Worthy, and I enjoyed being outdoors, swimming, and being lazy around the house!

    

I am very excited about this year!  We have lots of learning to do!

Welcome to Mrs. Worthy's Class!  I am so excited that I have the opportunity to be your teacher next year!  We are going to have MANY awesome learning experiences together.

Animals are Characters, too...

Wow...it has been way too long since I have given a classroom update.  That is not to say that great things have not been happening in Room 506 this year. 

We just finished up our third Common Core English Language Arts unit which focused on point of view with an emphasis on animals as characters.  We looked at animals that are personified such as Ralph the Mouse and Desperaux.  We also looked at animals that don't take on human characteristics such as the Black Stallion and Winn Dixie.  We also researched animals and then compared how they are portrayed in narratives versus their real-life characteristics. 

Our culminating project has been animal stories with a research component.  The students chose an animal to research and then created a short informational film using the iMovie app.  They are currently writing narratives with the same animals as the main characters.  We are linking their videos to QR codes that will be put at the end of their stories so that their readers can find out information about the animal in the book.  I think it is so important that students realize that nonfiction reading can be linked to their fiction reading.  I always stress that if they are reading a story about a certain subject, such as the Titanic, then they should also find a nonfiction component to go with it.
